POISE and the Society for Continence (Singapore) held its first series of health talk on “Urinary Incontinence” with Pelvic Floor exercises to a group of women members of WINGS Organisation (Women’s Initiative for Ageing Successfully) on 13 March 2009 at their Bishan Lecutre Hall.
The lively afternoon session was conducted by Ms Li Ming Juan – a physiotherapist from Emmanuel Physiotherpy and also a volunteer with the Society.
It was well attended by some 30 participants whose age range from 40 years of age and above. Among the topics discussed included bladder weakness/ urinary incontinence and pelvic floor exercises.
Past studies have shown that 1 in 4 Singapore women experiences bladder weakness due to medical reasons. Women suffer from leaking episodes which prevent them from social activities and performing tasks which they enjoy doing. Many of them suffer in silence, too embarrassed to talk about it to their family, friends and even to doctors. In many cases this problem is due to weak pelvic floor muscles after multiple child births or surgical procedures due to other medical conditions. They were taught pelvic floor exercises, and drug treatment were administered.
The session aimed at educating women and providing an opportunity to clarify and ask questions as well as to share their experiences with their fellow particpants. More information on “Urinary Incontinence” and Bladder Health is available at these websites – www.poise.com.sg and www.sfcs.org.sg. We hope that such talks would create greater awareness to the women population of Singapore and empower them to live life to the fullest and free them from social embarrassement.
