The Society for Continence (Singapore) organised its 3rd World Continence Week (WCW) on 18 June 2011 at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) Auditorium. The half-day event was held to cater to the needs of both English and Chinese speaking heartlanders on urinary incontinence. Response to the event was overwhelming, attracting some 560 registrants. However, due to capacity constraint of the auditorium at KTPH, we could only admit 450 participants.

The highlight of the WCW was the public forum where several doctors spoke on important and everyday issues of incontinence. They included Dr Colin Teo (Khoo Teck Puat Hospital), Dr Siow Woei Yun (Raffles Hospital) and Dr Terence Teng (Khoo Teck Puat Hospital) who spoke on “Incontinence in the Elderly”, “Prostate Problem in Elderly Male” and “Incontinence and Urinary Tract Infection in the Female” respectively. All participating doctors fielded questions from the public and provided valuable guidance to them during their presentations and Q&A sessions.

In conjunction with the WCW, SFCS also organised a skit competition to spice up the event in-between the talks by the doctors. Three groups of nurses from United Medicare Centre, Mun Fat Tong Nursing Home and Peace Heaven Salvation Army Nursing Home wer shortlisted to compete on stage. The top three cash prizes were sponsored by our sponsor SCA Hygiene Singapore Pte Ltd. In addition, our sponsor also funded major portion of the expenses for the event.

Other activities included participation by 10 product companies that put up booths displaying their products and gave away freebies to participants.

Feedback from participants was encouraging. Many had their queries cleared during the Q&A session. Common myths such as ageing will cause incontinence; it is a normal ageing problem and nobody can avoid this condition were cleared. We hope to be able to organise more of such events in future to increase awareness of Urinary Incontinence to more heartlanders.
